As you can tell, we are very proud of our school, our students, our staff, our parents, and our entire school community! How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long
Our school has a tradition of "Excellence!" For many years, we have been one of the top performing public schools in North Carolina, as determined by the North Carolina A.B.C. Testing Program, and the federal government's "No Child Left Behind" legislation (Adequate Yearly Progress- A.Y.P.) ! In fact, just this past school year, our school was designated as an "Honor School of Excellence," due to the fact that over 90% of our students scored at or above grade level! Our precise Proficiency Rate is 92.6%!! Our designation as an "Honor School of Excellence" is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a public school by the State and Federal Government! In fact, less than 2 % of the public schools in North Carolina this school year earned this designation. We were also labeled a "School of Expected Growth," because our students in grades 3 - 5 made expected growth academically! This means that not only is our school one in which our students perform well, but they are still making tremendous growth in the area of academics. The Federal Government also designated us as a school meeting or exceeding all aspects of the "No Child Left Behind" legislation! In fact, we have met these guidelines and expectations every school year since its implementation.
However, we continue to look for innovative and effective ways in which to improve the academic, social, psychological, physical, and emotional development of our students! As a result, we are continuing the following: a School Wide Mentoring Program, After School Tutoring, Math Facts Club, business partnerships, implementation of "Mountain Math," and an expansion of "Write From the Beginning," and Student-Led Conferences! We know that these research-based "Best Practices" and "High Yield Strategies" will assist us in providing a high quality education for each of our students!
We invite you to become a contributing member of our school family! There are many opportunities for you to serve. These include: mentoring a child, volunteering as a classroom helper, a lunch buddy, chaperoning field trips, providing snacks, grading papers, putting up bulletin boards, reading to, and with children, etc.! Therefore, we welcome you, should you desire to help make a positive difference in the life of a child! After all, "It takes an entire village to raise our children!"
